Dr. Marianne Mureithi has been appointed as the new Director of the KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR).
A seasoned scientist and leader, Dr. Mureithi has been a key figure at KAVI-ICR for several years, serving as a Principal Investigator in major research areas including HIV, mucosal immunology, HPV, and cancer immunology.

Human outbreaks of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) are more common in Middle Eastern and Asian human populations, associated with clades A and B. In Africa, where clade C is dominant in camels, human cases are minimal. We reviewed 16 studies (n = 6198) published across seven African countries between 2012 and 2024 to assess human MERS-CoV cases. We also analyzed data from four cohort studies conducted in camel-keeping communities between 2018 and 2024 involving camel keepers, camel slaughterhouse workers, and hospital patients with acute respiratory illness (ARI).

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) team commonly known as Team Afya was feted for emerging top during the University of Nairobi Annual Sports Day 2023.
FHS Dean Prof. George Osanjo presided over the event and awarded certificates to the team, that comprises of both students and staff.

Dr. Tom Osundwa a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi has performed numerous cleft lip and palate surgery on children over the years, putting a smile on the children’s face.
He explains that the face starts to form from separate sides, with portions coming together and fusing, during the early weeks of pregnancy, usually around five weeks. This fusion does not happen correctly in cleft lip and palate cases, leaving a gap in either the lip or the palate.

Scholars conducted a study to determine the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of critical care nurses on enteral feeding of critically ill patients.
A sample of 135 critical care nurses from the Kenyatta National Hospital. Out of these, at least 96% had positive attitudes toward enteral feeding of patience in critical care.

World haemophilia day is celebrated every 17th day of April. This year’s celebration was themed “equitable access for all.” The event brought together students, medical practitioners, people living with Haemophilia and other key stakeholders in the field.
The University of Nairobi in partnership with the Kenyatta Hospital and New European Surgical Academy (NESA) held a second surgical workshop. The main focus being on obstetrics and gynecology health.
A team from NESA led by the founder Dr. Michael Stark and four other gynecology specialists were the main speakers during the workshop, training the attendees on new and improved skills for handling gynecology cases.
Scholars conducted research on Maternal and Umbilical Cord Blood Lead Levels on selected informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya.
The study included mothers from the Dandora and Kariobangi estates who went to deliver at the Pumwani hospital. Blood samples and umbilical cord samples were collected and screened at the government chemist.

The Nairobi Surgical Skills Centre (NSSC) received a digital upgrade on their equipment. An appreciation launch was held on 14th March, 2024 to thank the sponsors for the state of the art equipment.
The digital upgrade grant was donated by Proximie’s Amazon Web Services Health Equity Award within the Innovate+ Kenya Global program. This provided for hardware, license, and change management and an additional in-kind value.
The department of human pathology held an appreciation event for their staff who have recently retired from the department. The event which was held on 8th march 2024 brought together post graduate students, members of staff and the retirees for a session of merry as they bid them farewell.
The Faculty of Health Sciences held its first ever cultural week organized by the Association of Medical Students University of Nairobi (AMSUN) Art club. The event brought together medical students who got a chance to showcase their different talents during the week.

The University of Nairobi on Friday, December 15, 2023 held its 70th graduation. Among the over 5,700 graduands was Mr. Kelvin Waweru, the valedictorian of the ceremony.

The elections saw more than 20 participants contest for different head positions in the association.
The chairperson position had 3 contestants in total with the winner Mohamed Jamal(MJ) emerging top with a total of 735 votes.
Athman Mwatondo, a PhD scholar from the University of Nairobi's Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology has led a critical study on brucellosis, a neglected zoonotic disease impacting humans and livestock.
This research that is part of his ongoing doctoral research was supervised by his mentors Dr. Marianne Mureithi and Dr. Stephen Gichuhi both from UoN, alongside Dr. Bernard Bett from the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).

The 6th International Conference on Health (ICH 2023) was held on 12th and 13th October 2023 at the Lecture Theatre III, at the Faculty of Health Sciences.
This was the first time that the conference was held in a hybrid session. It attracted at least 100 participants in person and more than 150 attendees online.
The University of Nairobi Dental school on 14th of October 2023 celebrated 50 years of existence.
Since being founded in 1974 the school has graduated at least 20 students each year. It prides itself having the highest number of alumni dentists practicing around the country.

On the 29th of September, 2023 the Association of Medical Students University of Nairobi (AMSUN) in partnership with Kenya Medical Association hosted the 2nd white coat ceremony for the first year class 2023/2024.
Over 600 students were admitted in the recently concluded 2023/2024 1st year admissions. The Faculty of Health Sciences had students from all around the country show up excited for their new academic journey.
The students were taken through biometrics registration where their details were taken to formally have them as students of the university.
In the rapidly advancing field of medicine, keeping up with the latest research and contributing to the existing body of knowledge is crucial for medical professionals. Manuscript writing serves as a platform for sharing discoveries, disseminating research findings, and sparking further discussions among experts in the field.
The University of Nairobi Alumni Association on the 7th of September 2023 paid a courtesy call to the Faculty of Health Sciences. Their visit targeted the Department of Pharmacy.
The meeting allowed discussions around strenghthening ties between the department and the Association through engaging in and supporting different activities in partnership to help grow both establishments.
On the 6th of September 2023 visitors from Italy including a representative from the embassy of Italy and a Professor of Urology from Campus Bio Medico University of Rome. The courtesy call aimed at setting up collaborations between the Faculty and other medical stakeholders from Italy. In attendance was a representative from the Ministry of Health- Kenya Dr. Ouma Oluga.
Scholars conducted a study to determine the admission patterns of orthopedic and trauma patients at the Kenyatta National Hospital. The study included reviewing 109 patient charts to determine the cause of admission.
The study revealed that a majority of patients admitted with trauma and orthopedic injuries were of middle age between 25 and 64 years. The average age was 33.8 years. More men than women were admitted for the same.
Dr. Sylvia Opanga was awarded the Judith K. Jones award for impact on public health through phamacoepidemiology.
The award was in recognition for her demonstrable impact on public health through work in pharmacoepidemiology.
The award was presented to Dr. Opanga during the 39th International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology & Therapeutic Risk Management in Canada.

Diaspora Fellow from Northeastern University, Boston, USA during his seminar on collaborative global health.
As a health system expert, Prof. Wamai had a loaded presentation on a life of work and

Elimination and prevention of mother to child human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission remains a global public health concern. Scholars conducted a control case study on determinants of human immunodefiency virus (HIV) transmission among children born to HIV- infected mothers on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) program. The study included cases specifically from Kilifi County.
The department of Human Pathology on Thursday 3rd August 2023 hosted Prof. Véronique Blanchard from Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany at the Faculty of Health Sciences, for a public lecture on the Omics discipline “Validation of the serum N-glycome based biomarker for ovarian cancer via a multi-centre study in Kenya and Germany”
A wound care symposium organized by the wound society of Kenya was held on 28th, July 2023 at the
University of Nairobi at Faculty of Health Sciences Lecture Theatre Three.
The colorful event had a host of doctors speaking on different topics concerning wound care. The
topics included basic wound care knowledge, wound dressing and modern technology, nutrition in
wound care management and management of chronic wounds.
KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) was awarded the 2022 International AIDS Vaccine Initiative
(IAVI) External Quality Assessment (EQA) Awards For Tier 1 and Tier 2. This is the second year running
that the Institute has won this prestigious award. It recognizes the best performing laboratories
amongst their Clinical Research Centres in Africa. The Institute at the University of Nairobi, KNH Campus
was first among Tier 1 and the Kangemi site among Tier 2.
Pain management is key in delivering quality health care for patients. This was the
main message during a training conducted by Kenya Hospice and Palliative Care
Association(KEHPCA) on Pain and palliative care. The hybrid training saw more than
100 participants in attendance.
The training targeted this year's finalists to equip them with palliative care
knowledge to deliver better care for their patients as they head out for their
internships.

Scholars conducted a study on hematological abnormalities among patients with chronic kidney disease.
The study conducted on 120 patients over a period of six months, revealed that about a third of the patients presented neutrophilia, which is an indication of inflammation in the patient’s body. Microcytic anaemia is the most common haematological abnormality and is likely due to iron deficiency.
The University of Nairobi (UoN) and Wondfo Biotech Company Limited jointly launched a laboratory training center that will offer an opportunity to local researchers jointly with their counterparts from China to innovate technologies that are best suited in addressing local health challenges.
The launch of the centre came as a result of a signed collaboration between UoN and Wondfo Biotech Company Limited, a Chinese manufacturer and distributor of diagnostic equipment.

A comparative study on knowledge and attitudes of Female Genital Mutilation was conducted nurses and midwives in Cyprus and Kenya.
It is estimated that 200 million women are living with Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). FGM is a violation of human rights. It has detrimental effects on women's physical and psychological health. Nurses and midwives have an essential role in the management and prevention of FGM.
The University of Nairobi’s partnership with Energy Circle Australia has led to the introduction of the use of Artificial Intelligence assisted medical devices to help improve the testing and diagnosis of non-communicable diseases at community level. The initial focus being in Hypertension and diabetic retinopathy.
A study conducted by scholars on women planning conception revealed that they are more
prone to Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Infections.
The study aimed at developing a risk score to identify women with higher likelihood of
contracting Chlamydia Trachomatis infection. This would determine prioritization of
patients at risk for lab testing.
CT infection testing is a very costly affair. To encourage early detection, identification of

On Monday 19th June 2023 a team from Charité University Berlin German paid a visit to the University of Nairobi Faculty of Health sciences.
The University of Tennessee Nursing College paid a visit to the Faculty of Health sciences University of Nairobi. The courtesy call came after a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities for academic collaboration.

The experts urged Kenyans to use anti-biotics appropriately to stop Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) in the country.

Kenya belongs to a high incidence region known as Africa’s oesophageal cancer corridor. Research on EC in Kenya has gone highly unnoticed. EC in Kenya is unique in its high percentage of young cases.
A study was conducted and the focus was mainly on significant risk factors such as alcohol drinking, genetic factors, malnutrition and hot food/drink. Future directions in the study and prevention of EC in Kenya were also discussed.

In Kenya, there is lack of evidence on existing dementia care pathways, with minimal or no presentation for dementia-related symptoms in health care settings.
A study was conducted to determine whether Keloid history affected reoccurrence. This was an eventual longitudinal study to determine whether histopathological parameters of keloid influence recurrence.
Keloids are fibro proliferative disorders characterized by high recurrence rates, with few factors known to influence the same. Patients with keloids managed by surgical excision were followed up at Kenyatta National Hospital between August 2018 and July 2020.
A study has revealed proper detection, assessment and management of post-operative pain in neonatal patients is vital to mitigate poor outcome.

Scholars conducted a study on factors associated with HIV stigma among youth living with the
virus in Kenya. Most if not all participants confessed to having faced at least one form of stigma
from the people they associated with; friends, family or even sexual partners.
Scholars conducted a study on patients living with diabetes to evaluate the quality of life they lead focusing on those suffering from vision impairing diseases caused by diabetes.
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common vision disease. It is a disease that affects the retina caused by high levels of blood sugar which is diabetes.
Integration of cervical cancer screening in family planning clinics has allowed for more reproductive-aged women to be screened according to scholars.
The study conducted in the coastal Mombasa, Kenya revealed that the presence of screening facilities in family planning clinics has enabled the health workers to reach many women aged 15 to 49 years.
Obstetric emergencies can arise at any point during labor, necessitating rapid and skilled intervention to minimize adverse outcomes for both mother and child.
Emergency obstetric drills have become a vital component of modern obstetric care in order to guarantee that healthcare providers are well-equipped to manage such situations.
“For me HIV is more than a disease; it is an injustice. With everything we know from 40 years of this pandemic, the science, the drugs, the prevention tools, no one should be infected by HIV and no one should die from AIDS related causes. We can end the ugly inequalities driving HIV! We have all the tools to prevent and treat HIV and enable people to live long and healthy lives. If we do the right thing, we can end the injustice of AIDS.

Prof. David Wedge from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom was hosted at the University of Nairobi, Faculty of Health Sciences for a cancer seminar where he gave a talk on Cancer Evolution and Ethnicity.
The University of Nairobi USAID Fahari ya Jamii project, in partnership with the Nairobi City County Government was honored to host Dr. John Nkengasong, the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, at the Mathare North Health Centre on 24th January 2022.

This program complements other training programs within FHS/UoN, and is hosted at KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research.
Miheso Collins Lemashon, a graduate from the Faculty of Health Sciences with a Bachelor of Science degree in Medicine and Surgery specializing in Human Anatomy was privileged to give the valedictorian speech during the 68th University of Nairobi graduation ceremony.
He had the highest aggregate score of 90.5 points which earned him a first class honors.

The Operation Theater Practitioners Alliance of Kenya (OTPAK) in collaboration with Professor Jag Dhanda from Brighton and Sussex Medical School held an educational workshop for Kenyan physicians.
Over the course of 3 days, attendees were lectured on multiple concepts, ranging from virtual reality to fracture management, and taught multiple surgical procedures on cadavers.

surveying three regional public hospitals in Kenya.

The Faculty of Health Sciences emerged 2nd runners up in this year’s University of Nairobi annual sports day.
The teams comprising of both staff and students commonly known as Team Afya, had an impressive performance during the games.
Team Afya won gold medals in chess (women) and rugby; silver medals in netball and chess (men), and bronze medals in hockey, basketball, swimming and athletics.
Prof. Vishva Dixit, an alumnus of the University of Nairobi was decorated with the Bijvoet Medal by Bijvoet Centre for Biomolecular Research at Utrecht University in Netherlands.
Prof. Dixit graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1980. He then joined Washington University School of Medicine and served as a resident in the Department of Pathology.
Scholars conducted a study to determine whether the time-frame between the time of death and when
samples for Minimally Invasive Tissue Sampling (MITS) were collected affects the results gotten.
MITS technique is an alternative for complete diagnostic autopsy. It involves sampling specific tissue-cell samples for determining the cause of death. This method however, must be aided by other data for it to be successful. It is mostly used by low and middle income level countries because of its cost effective nature.
Becoming a medical student is in itself a big feat. Not only is it the first of many steps towards becoming a doctor, but it is also the beginning of a journey of 6 years that is like no other.
For this reason, the Association of Medical Students at the University of Nairobi (AMSUN), decided to usher in the new crop of medical students in the style and manner that this momentous occasion deserves.

The University of Nairobi held its 67th graduation ceremony on 23rd September, 2022.
A total of 3553 graduands were conferred with degrees and diplomas and one Honoris Causa. A total of 85 PhD 595 Masters degrees, 2508 Bachelor degrees, 62 Post Graduate Diplomas and 302 Diplomas were conferred to the well deserving graduands for their accomplishments.

The 2022/2023 academic year’s freshmen were admitted from 19th to 21st September, 2022. Over 500 undergraduate students were admitted to pursue different courses offered at the faculty. The courses are medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and dentistry.
Bronchiectasis (BE) is a disease that affects the bronchial area of the lungs. Its most common symptom
being recurring productive cough in the patient. In Africa in particular, many children are reported to be
suffering from chronic BE Despite the efforts made all around the word to create awareness about it.
Scholars therefore conducted a research on the challenges and barriers to the care for BE child patients
in Africa.
A higher percentage of children below the age of fifteen years diagnosed with BE were found to be HIV

A study was conducted by scholars on predicators of postnatal depression(PND) in slums in Nairobi, area Kenya.
The study was done in two maternal clinics attended by mothers from slum areas-Riruta and Lang’ata maternal and child health clinics. The study included postnatal mothers between the ages of 18 to 40 years a majority being between ages 18 to 24 years with new borns aged between six to ten weeks. The new mothers underwent a test to determine whether or not they suffered from PND and if they did how severe it was.
The prevalence of HIV among men who have sex with men in Kenya has been on the rise. A group of
scholars conducted a study to analyze the transmission patterns of the disease to aid in curbing the HIV
epidemic in Kenya.
Most Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) were found to travel from Coast province to Nairobi and eventually Kisumu.
It is common that assessing the biochemical values of blood helps in identifying the functional disorders of different body systems and organs such as liver, kidneys and many more. However, in this review, assessing the biochemical values were deemed significant in determining reliable blood donors at Kenyatta National Hospital. The evaluation was gender-based and the findings showed a gender difference of biochemical values in both male and female.

Findings from a study conducted by experts revealed that children and adolescents living with HIV are
more likely to be affected by oral diseases compared to those without the virus.
Children aged between 6 years and 12 years who are mostly transitioning between primary to
permanent teeth were the targeted children in the stud. A higher percentage of them were found to be
suffering from various dental related diseases.

An analysis performed by scholars from the University of Nairobi identified that adults who are patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease have positive attitude to nutrition management but dismiss the essence of nutrition management exercises such as potassium reduction, the consumption of supplements, comprehending nutrition information, and fluid control despite their education and income status.

A study conducted by scholars from the University of Nairobi has shown that women who are exposed
to vaginal washing have a lower chance of conceiving naturally compared to those who do not practice
vaginal washing especially around their fertility period of their cycle.
According to the study, women who practice vaginal washing with water only have a higher chance of getting pregnant compared to those who wash with water and soap.
The fight against Tuberculosis (TB) was stepped up following the launch of new tools to help in the diagnostic and treatment of the disease in Kenya.

Cervical cancer is a preventable disease. Despite this, the annual incidence globally is projected to increase from 570,000 cases currently to 700,000 by 2030, and most of these will be among young under-educated women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) (1, 2). The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine offers the potential to eliminate cervical cancer if routinely available and used based on recent studies (3). This is especially important in LMICs where the cost of cancer care can be prohibitive including biological medicines (4).

UoN’s USAID Fahari ya Jamii project took part in the Nairobi accelerated COVID-19 vaccination campaign launch at Kibra Level 3 Hospital on Thursday, 2nd June 2022. The campaign targets to have at least 70% of the population in Nairobi vaccinated in the next six weeks. Currently, 48.9% (1,492,877) of the population in Nairobi is fully vaccinated against a targeted population of 3,052,494 persons.

The inaugural brain tumour conference was held on 20th-21st May, 2022 at the Faculty of Health Sciences(FSH), University of Nairobi(UoN).

Dr. Sylvia Opanga, a senior lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy scooped the top award at Nairobi Innovation Week 2022.
Her health innovation on Diabetic patient diary emerged top in the staff category during the 3-day event held at the University of Nairobi.
According to Dr. Opanga, her innovation was inspired by COVID-19 pandemic.

Background.
Using classical and genomic epidemiology, we tracked the COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya over 23 months to determine the impact of SARS-CoV-2 variants on its progression.
Methods.
SARS-CoV-2 surveillance and testing data were obtained from the Kenya Ministry of Health, collected daily from 306 health facilities. COVID-19-associated fatality data were also obtained from these health facilities and communities. Whole SARS-CoV-2 genome sequencing were carried out on 1241 specimens.
Results.
HIV-1 transmission dynamics involving men who have sex with men (MSM) in Africa are not well understood. We investigated the rates of HIV-1 transmission between MSM across three regions in Kenya: Coast, Nairobi and Nyanza. We analysed 372 HIV-1 partial pol sequences sampled during 2006-2019 from MSM in Coast (N=178, 47.9%), Nairobi (N=137, 36.8%), and Nyanza (N=57, 15.3%) provinces in Kenya. Maximum-Likelihood (ML) phylogenetics and Bayesian inference were used to determine HIV-1 clusters, evolutionary dynamics, and virus migration rates between geographic regions.

The world’s largest cleft-focused organization, Smile Train, has partnered with the leading University in the region, University of Nairobi , through the Department of Surgery to offer full scholarships to medical residents based in Africa to study plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Asha Sigei an alumna of the University of Nairobi has been appointed as the new Chief Pathologist and Medical Director of the Iredell Memorial Laboratory in the United States of America.
Her appointment was announced in a statement published on Iredell Health System website on 6th January, 2022.

Dr. Sigei completed a year-long internship in Kenya before moving to the United States for further studies.

I studied at Ruaraka Academy and did my KCPE exams in 2010 and scored 416 marks. I later on joined The Kenya High School and sat for KCSE in 2014 where I scored A and joined the University of Nairobi to study Pharmacy.

The day that is marked internationally highlights the urgency in eliminating the inequalities that drive pandemics around the world. The Global AIDS Strategy (2021-2026) adopted at the 2021 UN High-Level Meeting on AIDS has outlined ending inequalities as key to fighting AIDS. This fight is integral because inequalities have fueled AIDS and other pandemics; these inequalities have been known to inhibit proven solutions to AIDS prevention and treatment.’

There was an increase in utilization of vitamins and immune boosters during the emergence of COVID-19 disease.

A study has shown an increase in the use of antibiotics and antimalarials in Africa and Asia due to corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
The study was conducted by Dr. Sylvia Opanga, a senior lecturer at the School of Pharmacy, University of Nairobi together with other scholars in Africa and Asia.
Dr. Opanga presented the study with its findings during the UoN-CHS COVID-19 Research Forum held on Tuesday 4th August, 2020.

Hand sanitizers are one of the key tools being utilized to control the spread of the novel SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus). The principle component and active ingredient of hand sanitizers that are recommended for coronaviruses is alcohol at a concentration of at least 60% (v/v). Cochlear implant surgeries will soon be offered by Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeons from the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
The good news was revealed by KNH CEO Dr. Evanson Kamuri during the event that was held to mark World Hearing Day at the College of Health Sciences on 3rd March, 2020.
Prof. Omu Anzala and Dr. Moses Masika both from KAVI Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) have outlined helpful measures that can be undertaken to reduce the risk of corona virus outbreak in Kenya.
According to Prof. Anzala there is no vaccine for the virus that has so far killed more than 3000 people globally.
“There is no vaccine for corona virus, the nearest we are drug development,” Prof. Anzala says.

My name is Romana Adero Ochanda, a 5th year medical student at the University of Nairobi.
Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) has been associated with improved infant outcome in mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV-1. Epitopes of these ADCC-mediating antibodies remain unidentified. CD4-inducible (CD4i) epitopes on gp120 are common ADCC targets in natural infection and vaccination. We tested whether CD4i epitope-specific ADCC mediated by maternal antibodies or passively-acquired antibodies in infants is associated with reduced MTCT and improved infant survival.

The School of Dental Sciences held its Hippocratic Oath ceremony for the graduates of class 2017 on Friday 17th November 2017 at the School of Dental Sciences.
The oath was administered by Dr. Regina J. Mutave – Dean School of Dental Sciences, to the (20) Bachelor of Dental Surgery students who qualified for the award of Degree in Bachelor of Dental Surgery by the University of Nairobi.
This open-label, randomised, longitudinal crossover study includes healthy Kenyan VZV-seropositive women at low risk for HIV infection. Participants receive a single dose of a commercial live-attenuated VZVOka vaccine at either week 0 (n=22) or at week 12 (n=22) of the study and are followed for 48 and 36 weeks postvaccination, respectively. The primary outcome is the change on cervical CD4+ T-cell immune activation measured by the coexpression of CD38 and HLA-DR 12 weeks postvaccination compared with the baseline (prevaccination).
A section of teaching staff from the College of Health Sciences successfully finished a pedagogy, andragogy and mentorship training held from 27th to 29th May, 2019.

The workshop which was organized by the University of Nairobi in liason with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was held in the School of Medicine Boardroom.
