Uon First Aid club blood drive sees strong turnout

University of Nairobi’s First Aid Club, in collaboration with Red Movement Kenya organized a blood drive at the UoN-KNH Campus from the 25th -27th March 2026, that saw a remarkable turnout of donors.

The event was aimed to replenish the dwindling blood supply at local hospitals. Volunteers who were mostly students at the Faculty of Health Sciences and collaborating organizations worked tirelessly, ensuring a smooth and efficient process for donors.

The drive was marked by a diverse group of participants, ranging from students and staff from the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), clinical residents and passersby.

Donations started on a low tally with the first day recording 33 pints but the number gradually grew to 44 pints donated on the second day culminating in 68 pints on the final day. A significant increase from last year’s 135 pints collected.

The organizers emphasized the importance of regular donations, as blood has a limited shelf life and is constantly needed.

“Blood is a natural resource that can hardly be artificially made. Thus, we can only get blood for patients from another healthy individual through a blood donation. With cases of bleeding disorders, trauma, and non-communicable diseases rising constantly, the need for blood countrywide is highest and most urgent, ever,” said lead organizer Mavine Omondi.

Other collaborative partners included F & S Scientific limited, Kenya Haemophilia Association, Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority, Presidents Award Kenya - KNH Campus, IPPNW-MSSR University of Nairobi and Association of Medical Students of the University of Nairobi (AMSUN).
