Three representatives from the University of Nairobi’s Faculty of Health Sciences—Dr. Peter Maturi Mwamba, along with medical students Lameck Ochieng (MBChB IV) and Faith Kendi Mwenda (MBChB V)—recently participated in an enriching exchange program at Yamaguchi University, Japan.

Dr. Bushra Sumra, a distinguished clinical research coordinator and an alumna of the University of Nairobi’s School of Medicine, has been honored with the prestigious 2025 Global Recognition Award for her groundbreaking contributions to clinical research and infectious disease investigation. Her exceptional leadership and innovative methodologies have set new standards in patient care, advancing evidence-based medical practices on a global scale.

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) proudly took center stage at this year’s University Staff Recognition Awards, demonstrating outstanding performance and a commitment to excellence in academia, research, and service. The event, held at Chandaria Auditorium on 10^th February, 2025 celebrated the dedication and achievements of university staff across various faculties and departments.

The First Aid Club at the University of Nairobi hosted an enlightening Basic Surgical Skills Training on January 24th, 2025, at Nairobi Surgical Skills Centre, Chiromo.

With great sadness, we announce the passing on of Dr. Walter Odhiambo, the immediate former Chairman of Department of Dental Sciences, University of Nairobi. He died on 23 January, 2025 at the Aga Khan University Hospital.

Over 800 girls and women from underprivileged backgrounds will gain data science skills, to apply in health science, courtesy of a project by the University of Nairobi in collaboration with the University of San Francisco.

The project dubbed ENabling Girls in AI and Growing Expertise (ENGAGE) targets to train girls and women from high schools, TVET and Universities on data science with the view to using the knowledge in data science to solve local public health problems.

The University of Nairobi congratulates Prof. Moses Obimbo Madadi for being recognized among the 100 most influential Africans in 2024 in the field of Science and Academia by the New African magazine.

The London based magazine released its highly anticipated annual listing of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2024 to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Africans from various fields and sectors who have made a positive impact on the continent and the world over the past year.

The event which was presided over by the Chancellor Prof. Patrick V. Verkooijen saw 5,243 graduands conferred with various degrees and diplomas of the University of Nairobi.

Out of this number, 884 were from the Faculty of Health Sciences. The 884 candidates were presented to the Chancellor for the conferment of their respective degrees by the Faculty Dean Prof. George Osanjo.

The cooperation between Charité - Universitätsmedizin and University of Nairobi started in 2016 and expanded its activities with the start of the four-year DAAD funding in 2021.

According to the experts, it is estimated that bacterial AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in 2019 and contributed to 4.95 million deaths.

Dr. Jacqueline Kitulu, an alumna of the University of Nairobi is the new World Medical Association (WMA) President for the 2025/2026 term.

Dr. Kitulu beat Prof. Caldas Alfonso of the Portuguese Medical Association in a hotly contested election held at the 75th WMA General Assembly in Helsinki, Finland.

She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Nairobi.

The Indocyanine Green Company, based in the UK, donated an Indocyanine Green (ICG) machine to the University of Nairobi's Department of Surgery, greatly improving patient care.

This cutting-edge equipment is essential for treating lymphoedema, a disorder that frequently develops following breast surgery or as a result of elephantiasis, a condition that complicates treatment by accumulating lymphatic fluid.

On the 31st of August 2024, the Association of Medical Students of the University of Nairobi (AMSUN) held the 3rd white coat ceremony. This colorful event saw more than two hundred first year medical students cloaked in white coats and inaugurated in the journey of medical training.

The event was graced by Dr. Michael Magoha, a neurosurgeon and lecturer at the University of Nairobi Department of Surgery.

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) team commonly known as Team Afya was feted for emerging top during the University of Nairobi Annual Sports Day 2023.

FHS Dean Prof. George Osanjo presided over the event and awarded certificates to the team, that comprises of both students and staff.

The University of Nairobi in collaboration with African Forum for Research and Education in Health (AFREhealth) hosted the 7th annual afrehealth symposium in Nairobi, Kenya. The event which was held from 6^th to 8^th August, 2024 attracted over 200 participants from 38 countries in Africa and beyond.

Scholars conducted a study to determine how changes in vaginal microbiota and/or cervicovaginal cytokines may mediate women’s increased risk of HIV acquisition during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

AI integration in HIV therapy has demonstrated significant promise for furthering research, expanding access to care, and enhancing patient outcomes.

The toughest issue was imagining the structure of the virus, which is always changing, using trial and error methods prior to artificial intelligence.

Dr. Tom Osundwa a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi has performed numerous cleft lip and palate surgery on children over the years, putting a smile on the children’s face.

He explains that the face starts to form from separate sides, with portions coming together and fusing, during the early weeks of pregnancy, usually around five weeks. This fusion does not happen correctly in cleft lip and palate cases, leaving a gap in either the lip or the palate.

The Association of Medical Students of the University of Nairobi (AMSUN) held the 14th edition of its scientific and innovation conference on the 20th and 21st of June, 2024 at the Chandaria Centre for Performing arts, University of Nairobi Towers.

The association holds a scientific conference that aims to nurture young scientists and foster positive research culture among them in the field of health.

Scholars conducted a study to determine the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of critical care nurses on enteral feeding of critically ill patients.

 A sample of 135 critical care nurses from the Kenyatta National Hospital. Out of these, at least 96% had positive attitudes toward enteral feeding of patience in critical care.

The Dean Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. George Osanjo held talks with Prof. Olayinka Ogunleye from the Lagos State University College of Medicine.

It was all smiles as the University of Nairobi recognized 610 students during the Annual Student Recognition Ceremony held at Taifa Hall.

The 8^th edition of the Nairobi innovation week was held at university of Nairobi main campus. The three-day event saw innovators gather to showcase their creative innovations that are solving daily universal problems.

The Kenya Haemophilia Association (KHA) in collaboration with Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) held celebrations to commemorate world haemophilia day 2024.

World haemophilia day is celebrated every 17^th day of April. This year’s celebration was themed “equitable access for all.” The event brought together students, medical practitioners, people living with Haemophilia and other key stakeholders in the field.

The University of Nairobi in partnership with the Kenyatta Hospital and New European Surgical Academy (NESA) held a second surgical workshop. The main focus being on obstetrics and gynecology health.

A team from NESA led by the founder Dr. Michael Stark and four other gynecology specialists were the main speakers during the workshop, training the attendees on new and improved skills for handling gynecology cases.

Scholars conducted research on Maternal and Umbilical Cord Blood Lead Levels on selected informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya.

The study included mothers from the Dandora and Kariobangi estates who went to deliver at the Pumwani hospital. Blood samples and umbilical cord samples were collected and screened at the government chemist.

The Dean FHS Prof. George  Osanjo  hosted Dr. Andrew Gardner, a senior staff specialist anaesthetist in Department of Anaesthesia, Sir. Charles Gairdner Hospital, and Chair, Sir. Charles Gairdner Hospital Clinical Association.

Chuka University hosted a public lecture by Dr. Francis Wanyama, from the Department of Human Pathology at the University of Nairobi on 1^st March, 2024.

Dr. Wanyama was invited as a chief guest at the event courtesy of Faculty of Science and Technology, Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences section.

The Nairobi Surgical Skills Centre (NSSC) received a digital upgrade on their equipment. An appreciation launch was held on 14^th March, 2024 to thank the sponsors for the state of the art equipment.

The digital upgrade grant was donated by Proximie’s Amazon Web Services Health Equity Award within the Innovate+ Kenya Global program. This provided for hardware, license, and change management and an additional in-kind value.

The department of human pathology held an appreciation event for their staff who have recently retired from the department. The event which was held on 8^th march 2024 brought together post graduate students, members of staff and the retirees for a session of merry as they bid them farewell.

The Faculty of Health Sciences held its first ever cultural week organized by the Association of Medical Students University of Nairobi (AMSUN) Art club. The event brought together medical students who got a chance to showcase their different talents during the week.

AMSUN Art is a club dedicated to providing a platform for medical students to express their talents and network with like-minded individuals. The week was packed full of interesting exhibitions, workshops and was crowned by a prom night.

A Breakthrough in Tuberculosis Treatment: Tailoring to Your Genetic Makeup

We are proud to announce a landmark achievement. The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of Nairobi, in partnership with the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, has been awarded a significant grant of approximately 70 million Kenyan Shillings (KSH) from the Canadian International Development Scholarships 2030 (BCDI 2030).

The University of Nairobi on Friday, December 15, 2023 held its 70^th graduation. Among the over 5,700 graduands was Mr. Kelvin Waweru, the valedictorian of the ceremony.

Kelvin, a Bachelor of Pharmacy student, was overjoyed by his and his fellow graduands’ achievement.

The University of Nairobi Faculty of Health Sciences on 1^st December, 2023 officially launched the Afya Innovation Lab, a lab that aims to foster a culture of health entrepreneurship and innovation at the Faculty.

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) emerged the best performing faculty during the University of Nairobi annual performance contract signing and staff recognition awards held on 27^th November, 2023.

The two in one event had the top officials signing their performance contracts in the presence of other members of faculty and staff. The ceremony marked an important step in ensuring high standards of service delivery to clients of the University.

The Association of Medical Students of the University of Nairobi (AMSUN) held the 2023 elections on 24th November, 2023.
The elections saw more than 20 participants contest for different head positions in the association.
The chairperson position had 3 contestants in total with the winner Mohamed Jamal(MJ) emerging top with a total of 735 votes.

Athman Mwatondo, a PhD scholar from the University of Nairobi's Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology has led a critical study on brucellosis, a neglected zoonotic disease impacting humans and livestock.

This research that is part of his ongoing doctoral research was supervised by his mentors Dr. Marianne Mureithi and Dr. Stephen Gichuhi both from UoN, alongside Dr. Bernard Bett from the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).

UANDISHI-Building Capacity for Writing Scientific Manuscripts program held the certificate award ceremony to mark completion of the year 2023 training.

UANDISHI is an innovative and experiential blended mentor-mentee Scientific Manuscript Writing and Mentorship training being implemented at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), University of Nairobi.

The University of Nairobi in collaboration with UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (UNICEF ESARO) and other partners launched two short Social Norms courses on keeping children safe and reducing harmful practices that impact children.

The Faculty of Health Sciences Management Committee held a workshop on 2nd November, 2023.

The workshop was officially opened by the Faculty Dean, Prof. George Osanjo.

In his speech, Prof. Osanjo called on the committee members to work together as a team for the betterment of service delivery to students and stakeholders at the faculty.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is the winner of the 5^th edition of the University of Nairobi annual sports day held on Friday, 3^rd November, 2023.

This was a great improvement for the team that emerged as 2^nd runners up in last year’s event.

The teams comprising of both staff and students is commonly referred to as Team Afya, produced sterling performance in different games categories.

The 6th International Conference on Health (ICH 2023) was held on 12^th  and 13^th  October 2023 at the Lecture Theatre III, at the Faculty of Health Sciences.

This was the first time that the conference was held in a hybrid session. It attracted at least 100 participants in person and more than 150 attendees online.

The University of Nairobi Dental school on 14th of October 2023 celebrated 50 years of existence.
Since being founded in 1974 the school has graduated at least 20 students each year. It prides itself having the highest number of alumni dentists practicing around the country.

A great commission, whether assigned or unassigned, has the tendency to have a palpable effect on the surrounding. It is with this regard that I bring forth an article which has a personal observation from an eye-witness, Dr OmbiruMotunga, Classmate and colleague to Sister Onu, who wrote:

On the 29th of September, 2023 the Association of Medical Students University of Nairobi (AMSUN) in partnership with Kenya Medical Association hosted the 2nd white coat ceremony for the first year class 2023/2024.

Over 600 students were admitted in the recently concluded 2023/2024 1st year admissions. The Faculty of Health Sciences had students from all around the country show up excited for their new academic journey.
The students were taken through biometrics registration where their details were taken to formally have them as students of the university.

In the rapidly advancing field of medicine, keeping up with the latest research and contributing to the existing body of knowledge is crucial for medical professionals. Manuscript writing serves as a platform for sharing discoveries, disseminating research findings, and sparking further discussions among experts in the field.

The University of Nairobi Alumni Association on the 7th of September 2023 paid a courtesy call to the Faculty of Health Sciences. Their visit targeted the Department of Pharmacy. 

The meeting allowed discussions around strenghthening ties between the department and the Association through engaging in and supporting different activities in partnership to help grow both establishments.

On the 6th of September 2023 visitors from Italy including a representative from the embassy of Italy and a Professor of Urology from Campus Bio Medico University of Rome. The courtesy call aimed at setting up collaborations between the Faculty and other medical stakeholders from Italy. In attendance was a representative from the Ministry of Health- Kenya Dr. Ouma Oluga.

Scholars conducted a study to determine the admission patterns of orthopedic and trauma patients at the Kenyatta National Hospital. The study included reviewing 109 patient charts to determine the cause of admission.

The study revealed that a majority of patients admitted with trauma and orthopedic injuries were of middle age between 25 and 64 years. The average age was 33.8 years. More men than women were admitted for the same.

Dr. Sylvia Opanga was awarded the Judith K. Jones award for impact on public health through phamacoepidemiology.

The award was in recognition for her demonstrable impact on public health through work in pharmacoepidemiology.

The award was presented to Dr. Opanga during the 39^th International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology & Therapeutic Risk Management in Canada.

"Go, See, Learn and Change" This was the parting shot by Prof.Wamai Carnelian African
Diaspora Fellow from Northeastern University, Boston, USA during his seminar on collaborative global health.

As a health system expert, Prof. Wamai had a loaded presentation on a life of work and
passion in collaborative global health. He highlighted dimensions of global health including security and finance as an approach to this very important branch of health care.

Elimination and prevention of mother to child human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission remains a global public health concern. Scholars conducted a control case study on determinants of human immunodefiency virus (HIV) transmission among children born to HIV- infected mothers on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) program. The study included cases specifically from Kilifi County.

The department of Human Pathology on Thursday 3rd August 2023 hosted Prof. Véronique Blanchard from Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany at the Faculty of Health Sciences, for a public lecture on the Omics discipline “Validation of the serum N-glycome based biomarker for ovarian cancer via a multi-centre study in Kenya and Germany”

A wound care symposium organized by the wound society of Kenya was held on 28th, July 2023 at the
University of Nairobi at Faculty of Health Sciences Lecture Theatre Three.

The colorful event had a host of doctors speaking on different topics concerning wound care. The
topics included basic wound care knowledge, wound dressing and modern technology, nutrition in
wound care management and management of chronic wounds.

KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR) was awarded the 2022 International AIDS Vaccine Initiative
(IAVI) External Quality Assessment (EQA) Awards For Tier 1 and Tier 2. This is the second year running
that the Institute has won this prestigious award. It recognizes the best performing laboratories
amongst their Clinical Research Centres in Africa. The Institute at the University of Nairobi, KNH Campus
was first among Tier 1 and the Kangemi site among Tier 2.

Pain management is key in delivering quality health care for patients. This was the
main message during a training conducted by Kenya Hospice and Palliative Care
Association(KEHPCA) on Pain and palliative care. The hybrid training saw more than
100 participants in attendance.
The training targeted this year's finalists to equip them with palliative care
knowledge to deliver better care for their patients as they head out for their
internships.

Scholars conducted a study on hematological abnormalities among patients with chronic kidney disease.

The study conducted on 120 patients over a period of six months, revealed that about a third of the patients presented neutrophilia, which is an indication of inflammation in the patient’s body. Microcytic anaemia is the most common haematological abnormality and is likely due to iron deficiency.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and Wondfo Biotech Company Limited jointly launched a laboratory training center that will offer an opportunity to local researchers jointly with their counterparts from China to innovate technologies that are best suited in addressing local health challenges.

The launch of the centre came as a result of a signed collaboration between UoN and Wondfo Biotech Company Limited, a Chinese manufacturer and distributor of diagnostic equipment.

The University of Nairobi Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) will host the 6th International Conference on Health (ICH 2023) from 12th to 13th October, 2023.

The conference will bring together leading healthcare practitioners and intellectual leaders from Kenya and around the world. The insights from the conference will provide directions for the health agenda in Kenya and globally.

A comparative study on knowledge and attitudes of Female Genital Mutilation was conducted nurses and midwives in Cyprus and Kenya.

It is estimated that 200 million women are living with Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). FGM is a violation of human rights. It has detrimental effects on women's physical and psychological health. Nurses and midwives have an essential role in the management and prevention of FGM.

The University of Nairobi’s partnership with Energy Circle Australia has led to the introduction of the use of Artificial Intelligence assisted medical devices to help improve the testing and diagnosis of non-communicable diseases at community level. The initial focus being in Hypertension and diabetic retinopathy.

A study conducted by scholars on women planning conception revealed that they are more
prone to Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Infections.
The study aimed at developing a risk score to identify women with higher likelihood of
contracting Chlamydia Trachomatis infection. This would determine prioritization of
patients at risk for lab testing.
CT infection testing is a very costly affair. To encourage early detection, identification of
those at higher risk is key. With the development of the risk chart, women planning

On Monday 19th June 2023 a team from Charité University Berlin German paid a visit to the University of Nairobi Faculty of Health sciences.

The University of Tennessee Nursing College paid a visit to the Faculty of Health sciences University of Nairobi. The courtesy call came after a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities for academic collaboration.

The meeting had representatives from different departments of the UoN FHS. The meeting saw discussions  on capitalizing on research which is in line with both University’s’ goals. Integrated learning including simulation and virtual reality in the nursing world were also a key point of discussion.

Medical experts from the University of Nairobi (UoN) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) launched guidelines aimed at fighting antimicrobial resistance.

The experts urged Kenyans to use anti-biotics appropriately to stop Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) in the country.

Antimicrobial Resistance is a fast spreading pandemic that threatens the wellbeing of humanity because of the inability to treat simple infections due to resistance from the cause bacteria.

The Kenyatta National Hospital held its 2^nd Clean-up day on the 10/06/2023 to commemorate World Environment Day. In attendance were the KNH fraternity, management and various stakeholders of the hospital.

Kenya belongs to a high incidence region known as Africa’s oesophageal cancer corridor. Research on EC in Kenya has gone highly unnoticed. EC in Kenya is unique in its high percentage of young cases.

A study was conducted and the focus was mainly on significant risk factors such as alcohol drinking, genetic factors, malnutrition and hot food/drink. Future directions in the study and prevention of EC in Kenya were also discussed.

 The Chair department of Obstetrics and Genecology and acting Dean Prof. Eunice Cheserem welcomed a team from Anhui Medical University on 31^st May 2023. The courtesy visit was able to bring chairs and administrators from various departments of the faculty.

The Faculty of Health Sciences organized a tree planting day on 31st May, 2023 at the Kenyatta National Hospital Campus.

Various departments took part in the activity that was led by the acting Dean, Prof. Eunice Cheserem.

Prof. Cheserem emphasized on the need to plant more trees to save the planet.

The association between vaginal washing and HIV risk may be mediated by vaginal washing-associated changes in vaginal microbiota.

Advancements in Obstetrics and Gynaecological surgery in the 21^st Century are necessary and needed in the healthcare system. These sentiments were echoed by leading doctors and health providers on the 28^th and 29^th of April 2023 during a workshop organised by the University of Nairobi (UoN).

In Kenya, there is lack of evidence on existing dementia care pathways, with minimal or no presentation for dementia-related symptoms in health care settings.

A study was conducted to determine whether Keloid history affected reoccurrence.  This was an eventual longitudinal study to determine whether histopathological parameters of keloid influence recurrence.

Prof. David Wedge from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom was hosted at the University of Nairobi, Faculty of Health Sciences for a cancer seminar where he gave a talk on Cancer Evolution and Ethnicity.

The University of Nairobi USAID Fahari ya Jamii project, in partnership with the Nairobi City County Government was honored to host Dr. John Nkengasong, the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, at the Mathare North Health Centre on 24^th January 2022.

The visit provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress and successes achieved over the past 20 years through the implementation of programs aimed at ending HIV in the county.
