The University of Nairobi has appointed Prof. Marianne Wanjiru Mureithi as Professor of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, marking a historic milestone for the University and the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Prof. Mureithi becomes the first woman in the history of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology to attain the rank of Professor. She previously served as the Department's first female Chairperson from 2019 to 2025 and currently serves as the first female Director of the KAVI–Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR).
She earned her PhD in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, before undertaking a joint postdoctoral fellowship at the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University and MIT in the United States, and at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
Prof. Mureithi is an internationally recognized scientist whose research focuses on HIV, vaccine science, women's health, mucosal immunology, cervical cancer prevention, and emerging infectious diseases. She has led major international research collaborations and secured competitive research funding that has strengthened scientific capacity and global partnerships at the University of Nairobi and KAVI-ICR. In addition to her research contributions, Prof. Mureithi has mentored numerous MSc, PhD, postdoctoral, and early-career scientists, contributing to the development of the next generation of researchers in Kenya and across Africa.
Prof. Mureithi's appointment underscores the University of Nairobi's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and service. Her contributions continue to strengthen the University's role as a leading institution in biomedical research, scientific training, and global health.
