First Aid Club conducts an impacting blood donation drive – A lifesaving initiative

On the 12th and 13th of March 2025, the University of Nairobi First Aid Club, in collaboration with the Kenya Blood Tissue and Transplant Authority (KBTTA) and Red Movement Kenya (RMK), successfully conducted a blood donation drive. 

The event took place at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) Campus – Faculty of Health Sciences. The initiative aimed to replenish blood banks, raise awareness about voluntary blood donation, and educate the public on the importance of this noble cause.

With dedicated efforts from 15 volunteers from each organization, along with a few technicians from KBTTA, the two-day event resulted in an impressive accumulation of approximately 135 pints of blood. The overwhelming participation of students, faculty, and passersby reinforced our shared commitment to saving lives and fostering a culture of selflessness.

Participation:

A total of 135 pints of blood were collected.

Volunteers:

The First Aid Club played a key role in organizing and coordinating the event, with 15 dedicated volunteers actively assisting donors and ensuring smooth operations. KBTTA provided medical expertise, and RMK helped with advocacy.

Impact:

The collected blood will aid patients undergoing surgeries, accident victims, and individuals with chronic illnesses requiring transfusions.

Awareness & Education:

The First Aid Club led sensitization efforts, educating donors and passersby on the importance of blood donation and its critical role in medical interventions. Informational sessions included statistics on blood demand and how donations directly save lives.

Guest Appearance:

The Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences graced the closing ceremony, commending the club’s leadership and the volunteers’ dedication to this impactful initiative.

Partner Contributions

KBTTA ensured proper handling of blood donations, reinforcing their mission to maintain a safe and sustainable blood supply in Kenya.

RMK focused on raising awareness about Hemophilia, highlighting the need for continued blood donations to support patients with chronic blood disorders.
