Celebrating Excellence: FHS shines at University Staff Recognition Awards 2025

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) proudly took center stage at this year’s University Staff Recognition Awards, demonstrating outstanding performance and a commitment to excellence in academia, research, and service. The event, held at Chandaria Auditorium on 10th February, 2025 celebrated the dedication and achievements of university staff across various faculties and departments.

The awards ceremony brought together faculty members, university leadership, and distinguished guests to honor the exceptional contributions of staff who go above and beyond in their roles.

The Faculty of Health Sciences stood out as a beacon of excellence, earning multiple accolades that highlight its continued pursuit of academic and professional distinction. From teaching excellence to research contributions and community engagement, FHS staff have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to both students and the broader university mission.

Among the day’s most prestigious honors was the Global Recognition Award, presented to Dr. Loice Ombanjo. Dr. Ombanjo got the recognition for impacting the management of HIV care by providing evidence on the management of second-line antiretroviral therapy (Publication, USA guidelines, MOH memo, BHIVA guidelines) awarded by WHO in 2023.

In the Innovation and Creativity category, Prof. Sylvia Opanga emerged the 2nd runner up for coming up with a prescription reminding device for use in the area of health. The device reminds when a prescription is to be taken and also dispenses the right medication and number of tablets. A patent has been applied for the product. During this period, the innovation was developed further for integration with internet, AI and USSD.

Prof. Dalton Wamalwa emerged 2nd runner up in the Lecturer of the Year Award. Prof. Wamalwa’s innovative teaching methods and mentorship have transformed the learning experiences of countless students. His ability to bridge theory and practice has not only inspired learners but has also set a benchmark for academic excellence.

Additionally, Prof. Walter Jaoko emerged 1st runner up in the Top Researchers Award category with 1,435 Citations and 10 publications. Prof. Jaoko is involved in groundbreaking work in HIV research. His contribution has not only advanced knowledge in the field but has also influenced industry practices, reinforcing the faculty’s reputation as a hub of scholarly excellence.

Dr. Fred Bukachi emerged 2nd runner up in Industry-Linkage individual category. As the Director of the ARUA Centre of Excellence for Non-Communicable Diseases (CoE NCDs), Dr. Bukachi has played a pivotal role in advancing research, policy development, and international collaboration.

Under his leadership, the Centre has expanded its institutional partnerships, engaging with AMREF International University, the University of Cape Coast, the University of Dar es Salaam, and several counties in Kenya to strengthen research initiatives. His efforts have also positioned the Centre as a global thought leader through participation in high-profile conferences such as the Nobel Africa Symposia and the Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoRE) conference.

Dr. Bukachi spearheaded the "Caring for Caregivers" project, a three-year, KES 30 million initiative aimed at developing a national policy for non-communicable disease caregivers in Kenya, demonstrating his commitment to policy-driven healthcare improvements. Additionally, his strategic vision led to the development of a five-year operational plan, set to launch in early 2025, ensuring the Centre’s continued growth and long-term impact.

Mrs. Deborah Mogi from the Department of Human Pathology was awarded the Long Service Award having worked as a Chief Technologist for 38 years and 5 months.

15 staff members were awarded for exemplary rating during the Staff Performance Appraisal at the Faculty. They include; Prof. Zahida Qureshi, Prof. Alfred Osoti, Dr. Marybeth Maritim, Dr. Susan Odera, Dr. Martin Aluvaala, Mrs. Deborah Mogi, Ms. Caren Awilly, Mr. Paul Nyangaga, Ms. Doris Mokaya, Ms. Beatrice Nyambeki, Ms. Caroline Kariuki, Ms. Christine Badia, Mr. Jacob Otete, Ms. Veronica Kimilu, and Mrs. Wilkister Bwocha.

Beyond individual accolades, FHS as a whole was recognized as the best performing faculty in the Performance Contract Award, the most improved and 1st runner up in Community Service category. This award underscores FHS’ commitment to producing well-rounded graduates who are ready to tackle real-world challenges.

The Department of Medical Microbiology was 1st runner up in the best performing teaching departments.

FHS Dean Prof. George Osanjo expressed immense pride in the faculty’s achievements, stating, “These awards reflect the dedication, expertise, and passion that our faculty members bring to their roles every day. We are proud to be at the forefront of health studies and to continue shaping the future of the field.”
