KNH HOLDS FREE KIDNEY SCREENING CAMP IN KAKAMEGA

Kenyatta National Hospital in collaboration with the Kenya Renal Association (KRA) and the Kenya Nephrology Nurses Association (KNNA) held a free kidney screening camp on 8th November 2019 in Kakamega county referral hospital, Mumias sub-county hospital, Butere sub-county hospital and Malava sub-county hospital in Kakamega County

More than 1000 members of the public were screenedThe Renal camp screening focused on checking the blood pressure, blood sugar, urinalysis, and body weight as the key contributing factors to end-stage kidney disease (kidney Renal Failures). KNH doctors led by Dr. Tom Omulo also performed Arterio Venous Fistula (AVF) surgeries. An AV fistula is a connection, made by a vascular surgeon, of an artery to a vein. It is a preferred vascular access for chronic hemodialysis patients because lower incidences of blood stream infection are experienced and it also provides for better flow rates during dialysis

In his speech read by the CEC for Health Madam Rachel Okumu – Kakamega County, the governor expressed his gratitude to the KNH fraternity for accepting to share expertise and specialized health services to the Kakamega county communityAccessibility to specialized health care is one the challenges facing the public from far flung areas from KNH and hence taking these services to county-level benefits the communityDuring the camp, the public was also sensitized on the availability of Kidney transplantation in the country and KNH being the main public referral hospital for chronic hemodialysis patients

The Kenya Renal Association Secretary, Dr. Benjamin Wambugu exuded confidence in the effort of curbing the disease by encouraging the public to go for routine checkups as a means of detecting and preventing the end stage kidney disease.” Assessment of transplantability of patients on routine haemodialysis and referral for transplant evaluation is one key aspect that needs to be embraced in the realization of fewer cases of chronic haemodialysis patients.
Kenyatta National Hospital endeavors to offer specialized health care services being part of the Big 4 Agenda.
